Students Give Back to the Community
As part of LAUSD Beyond the Bell’s (BTB) Take Action Campaign (TAC) – now in 41 high schools and 36 middle schools throughout the greater Los Angeles area – student leaders were given an incredible opportunity to be of service and give back to their community through the ‘Backpack Challenge.’
The ‘Backpack Challenge’ was made possible thanks to the generosity of an anonymous player on the LA Clippers, who donated 500 backpacks and school supplies to BTB for this service project. Participating TAC high schools were each given 13 backpacks, along with the challenge of filling those backpacks with items of necessity such as socks, hygiene products, and food. Finally, for the last part of the challenge, our TAC leadership students were asked to identify elementary and middle schools in their community that were in need of these backpacks and supplies.
EduCare TAC students did an amazing job – from organizing school-wide supply drives in order to fill the backpacks, to delivering them to students in need from elementary and middle schools in their community.
Highlights from the Backpack Challenge:
- Bell High School – Our TAC leaders had the privilege of delivering the donated LA Clippers backpacks to local schools in the community of Bell: Nueva Vista Elementary School and Corona Avenue Elementary School. Each backpack was filled with school supplies, blankets, and hygiene products for the younger students in need.
- Diego Rivera Learning Complex – Our TAC leaders invited students from the nearby Edison Middle School to visit Diego Rivera with their families. Edison students, many of whom will be attending Diego Rivera for high school, were given the opportunity to learn more about the environment and culture on campus, to ask questions and interact with our TAC high school leaders, and to pick up their backpacks. The middle school students were thrilled to visit the high school campus and to pick up their gifts.
Thank you to Beyond the Bell, the LA Clippers and our outstanding TAC leaders for making this service challenge possible!
